Some of the most exciting sports matches come with high-scoring games, whether it be hockey, soccer, baseball, football, basketball, etc. Going to these games is wild as they make for some of the best games you’ll ever witness with extremely high energy.
In the NFL we’ve seen teams go on rampant scoring streaks, but what happens when both teams dominate each other on the scoreboard? In this article, we’ll have a look at the five games where the most points in NFL regular season were scored, and give you a little bit of background on each of them.
Starting the list of most points in NFL regular season games is the long-aged 1963 match between the Oakland Raiders (now Las Vegas Raiders) and Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans). Little did both teams know, they were about to put on a show for fans all over America. The first quarter saw 21 points scored between both teams, leading the game to end at 49-52 in favor of the Raiders, a major high-scoring game. A total of 111 points scored in this game makes it to fifth spot on our list.
Following up the hectic Raiders vs. The Oilers match is the November 1st, 2015 game between the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants. In the first 3 quarters, Odell Beckham Jr. scored 3 touchdowns, while the Saints answered for 42 points leaving the game sitting at 28-42 by the start of the fourth. Trumaine McBride would almost fuel a major comeback for the Giants, although they’d ultimately fall short to the Saints in a crazy 52-49 result.
In this epic showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and LA Rams back in 2018, both teams would set a record for scoring some of the most points in an NFL regular season game. The Rams started strong with 2 touchdowns in the 1st quarter compared to the Chief’s one, slipping to a 23-23 tied score by the start of the third. The game was constantly back and forth, as LA would secure 4 TDs and a field goal throughout the third and fourth, while the Chiefs trailed with every answer, scoring only 4 TDs with no field goal to edge out the Rams. The game ended 54-51 to the Rams, giving the Chiefs the unwanted record of highest scoring loser in the NFL.
November is the month for high-scoring games, as this bout between the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns took place on November 28, 2004, and has the most points in an NFL regular season game except for one other. The battle for the better Orange team began with the Bengals starting strong, leading the score chart in the first quarter and throughout most of the game. The Browns did however, manage to score 48 points surpassing the Bengals’ 44 by the middle of the fourth quarter, only to fall to 1 interception return TD and 1 rushing TD from Cincinnati at the end of the game, leaving it at a 58-48 result in favor of the Bengals.
This game between the then-Washington Redskins (now Commanders) and New York Giants has the most points in any NFL regular season game in the history of football. A then 1-9-1 New York Giants team would take on the 6-6 Washington Redskins, only to be destroyed by a score of 72-41 in the end. By the end of the second quarter, the Giants were trailing 14-34, a massive margin with no comeback in sight, before the Redskins put the pedal to the metal and notched 38 more points with the Giants only climbing back by 17. Even though 41 points is a lot for one team in a single game, it wasn’t even close to overcoming the offensive power the Redskins had at the time, closing the game out at a score of 72-41 to Washington.
