Records continue to be set and broken in the NFL, some even being set in the near previous years. It’s impressive to see how each season differs from the previous year, especially when new records are set at an all-time high before being broken within no time.
In the last few weeks of the 2023-24 NFL season, countless new records were set while breaking old ones. Let’s get into the most stand-out NFL Week 9 records while touching on who set the record, what team it was for and which year it was set.
Believe it or not, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud broke the record of most passing yards (433 yards) set back in Week 9, 2012 by Andrew Luck. He would finish with a whopping 30 completions, throwing 470 passing yards and 5 touchdowns without a single interception.
From this, Stroud earned himself the title of the first rookie in NFL history to score 4+ touchdown passes, throw 400+ passing yards and 0 interceptions, all while being the youngest quarterback to do so. Stroud was one of the best rookie QBs in recent memory, so it’s no surprise to see his name on this list.
Last year, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes hit his 64th career game with 2+ passing touchdowns. This stat tied Mahomes with QB Peyton Manning for the second-most games with multiple passing touchdowns thrown within the player’s first seven seasons.
It’s an incredible feat, although Mahomes surpassed this hallmark, as he has three games this season with 2+ passing TDs. He’s currently the all-time leader for this stat, as he’s recorded 67 games with 2+ passing TDs, and Dan Marino sits in second with 65 games.
For this rushing record, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Justin Fields was in his second year in the NFL before rushing for 178 yards in 2022, marking the most rushing yards in one week by a quarterback. He did this as the Chicago Bears QB against the Miami Dolphins in a game that ended in a 35-32 defeat.
Before this, Eagles QB Michael Vick held this record with 173 yards in a game against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 13 of the 2002-03 season. This isn’t one easy record to be broken, as by Week 6, Fields would acquire 408 rushing yards, 4th in the league to only RBs Kenneth Walker (424), Derrick Henry (462) and Travis Etienne (465) that season.
In a game where the Eagles barely clutched victory against the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia QB Jalen Hurts would tie the game with the 33rd rushing touchdown of his career. This would break Randall Cunningham’s previous record of most franchise rushing touchdowns for any quarterback.
Not only this, Hurts tied Cam Newton for most rushing TDs by a quarterback in their first four seasons of the NFL. With this record, Hurts would have more rushing touchdowns than any other player since 2021, regardless of position.
Unlike most other records, QB Joshua Dobbs of the Arizona Cardinals would set a unique one back in 2023. Before setting this record, Dobbs would throw 2 passing TDs and 1 rushing TD in a 31-24 loss against Baltimore. Shortly after, Dobbs was signed to the Minnesota Vikings, where he’d get his shot in Week 9 as QB due to Jaren Hall being ruled out for the game.
With basically no warm-up at all, Dobbs managed to throw two more TDs and rush for another, leading the Vikings to beat the Falcons 31-28 and making Dobbs the first player in NFL history to score 3+ touchdowns in consecutive games for different teams. This record will be hard to beat, as QBs aren’t moved to other teams very frequently, so it will be interesting to see how long Dobbs holds it.
