Dominant sports teams are an absolute privilege to watch, especially when they end up being the greatest of all time in their sport. From earning the longest winning streaks in their franchise to winning the most championships for their team, the most dominant teams make themselves known over just a short amount of time.
There are a lot of top-quality sports teams around the world, so it’s difficult to narrow it down to just five teams. While our choices are subjective to a degree, these are without question teams that made their mark in their sport.
Football is one of the most competitive sports out there so it’s tough to stand atop the other teams for more than a year at a time, especially with only 14 games in a regular season and a lot of player trades happening in the process. But the 1972 Miami Dolphins team seemingly defied all odds, completing the first-ever perfect NFL season 17-0 and winning Super Bowl VII with no struggle whatsoever. Being the only team to have achieved this feat (the 2007 Patriots came close, 2013 Seahawks got an honorable mention) they deserve a spot on the list of most dominant performances by teams in sports history, considering six of their players made the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Moving on to one of the best hockey teams of all time is the 1976-1977 Montreal Canadiens, who were the most dominant force in the NHL with 20 Stanley Cup trophies by the end of ‘77. With Scotty Bowman managing his team immaculately, players such as Guy Lafleur scored 50+ goals per season for four seasons straight along with Steve Shutt scoring 45, 60, 49, and 37 respectively. Along with their firepower to boast, the Canadiens would hold strong at the back with the defensive “Big Three” composed of Guy Lapointe, Larry Robinson, and Serge Savard. With talent such as this, the Canadiens would win the 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979 Stanley Cups all in a row. If that doesn’t scream dominance to you, we don’t know what will.
An easy introduction to the list of best teams in the history of any sport iS the ‘92 dream team that won gold in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. Considered by most to be the best basketball team in history, this absolute force of a ball team managed to score 100+ points in all of their games. To put their lineup into perspective, this team had the likes of Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and Scottie Pippen, with an easy trip to the finals, winning against Croatia by a whopping 117-85 scoreline. Go ahead and look at the results of every other game leading up to the finals and it’s no question that the 1992 USA Men’s Basketball sits atop one of the greatest sports teams to ever exist.
If you ever watched the ‘98 Yankees team and their incredible offensive capabilities, you’d know exactly why they sit on this list of best teams to exist in the history of any sport. To put this team’s standards into perspective, the New York Yankees won their 24th World Series title in 1998 with a 4-0 series sweep of the Padres. Yankees third baseman Scott Brosius would be named World Series Most Valuable Player, and the team would finish 114-48 that season, with seven players with at least 300 plate appearances passing the .800 OPS threshold. Considering they hold the MLB record for seasonal and playoff wins combined at a total of 125, the 1998 New York Yankees are easily one of the most dominant sports teams in history.
This season was completely dominated by an unbeatable Real Madrid team, which is widely considered the most successful in the history of an already extremely successful club. They won the Spanish La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup, showcasing just how deadly of a force they were. This was only the third time ever in history the team had achieved such a feat, and the 2016-17 team with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos would score a combined 106 team goals while only allowing 41. Overall, this team was terrifying to play against and deserves a spot on the list of most dominant teams in sports history.
