The final day of the La Liga season is here! Most teams have already secured their spots in stone, but some still have points to gain and prove. With Barcelona claiming the La Liga trophy in the 2024-25 season, we’re highlighting the two other games to catch on the conclusive day of the Spanish League season, including a featured matchup between Girona and Atletico Madrid at 8 AM ET on Sunday, as well as Villarreal vs Sevilla at 10:15 AM ET on Sunday.
Check out my picks for the games below and decide whether they’re something you want to fade or follow!
Girona has had a forgettable season compared to last year, as they currently sit in 15th place with 41 points as the season finale draws near. Compared to their 2023-24 3rd place finish, Girnona will be unhappy with their 11-8-18 (W-D-L) record as they head into a tough matchup against Atletico Madrid with a -12 goal differential. The good news, however, is that they are clear from relegation, so even a loss for the team tonight will prevent them from dropping down to the Spanish 2nd League. Despite having trouble keeping the ball out of their net, Cristhian Stuani has performed notably this season with 11 goals in 31 matches, so it will likely be up to him to score for Girona to have any hopes of snatching points in this match.
Atletico Madrid sits somewhat comfortably in 3rd place with 73 points, and 4th place Athletic Club (70 points) faces Barcelona, so while we can assume Athletic Club won’t gain points this evening, Atletico will still want to grab the win to finish the season strong as they’ve already qualified for Champions League next season. Overall, the team has gone 21-10-6 with an impressive 34-goal differential, the 3rd highest in the league. Players such as Julian Alvarez (17 goals), Alexander Smith (17 goals), Antoine Griezmann (8 goals and 7 assists), Rodrigo De Paul (6 assists) and Guiliano Simeone (6 assists) have all been major contributors to the team’s success this season. As things stand now, I expect striker Julian Alvarez to net at least his 18th goal this season, as he’s been ripe in form in the last few matches.
Villarreal are hot in form at the moment, showcasing a five-game winning streak with their most recent 3-2 victory over Barcelona, dishing out the Catalan’s only loss in the Spanish League during 2025. They sit comfortably in 5th place with 67 points, a 19-10-8 record, an 18-goal differential, and have secured a spot in the Champions League next season. Ayoze Perez has had a spectacular season, netting 19 goals in 30 games leading the team this season. Perez has been so on fire this season, and I expect another goal out of him tonight. Several teammates like Alex Baena (10 assists), Segi Cardona (8 assists) and Yeremy Pino (7 assists) lead the assist charts and should set up Perez today.
Sevilla are barely clear of relegation, and while they sit at 16th place with 41 points, RCD Espanyol could bump them to 17th with a win this weekend. However, despite the team’s horrid 10-11-16 record with a -11 goal differential, they steer clear of relegation no matter what. Only Sevilla’s Dodi Lukebakio is hitting the back of the net for the team, recording 11 goals in 37 games. It’s not looking too great for Sevilla, especially with Villarreal hot off the iron with a lifting win against Barcelona, so teammates like Saul Niguez (6 assists) and Juanlu Sanchez (4 assists) will need to completely ramp up efforts to help their team secure a tie at the very least.
